The 2019 Volvo S60 Catalyst Collection
Dedicated to the joyful driver, the redesigned 2019 Volvo S60 headlines the 3rd generation in what can only be described as Volvo's catalyst collection. Fresh off the assembly line of the United States' premiere, $1.1 billion Volvo factory, Swedish automakers are proud to present this redesigned compact luxury sport sedan as the pivotal collection to spark the shift towards a new electrified world of Volvo. Offered in the premium Momentum, sport R-design, luxury Inscription and performance Polestar Engineered, the dynamic 2019 S60 range is sure to turn heads.
The new Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered exterior.
The S60 is not new to fame, with a history of motorsport excellence under its belt, or shall we say chassis. With an impressive, literal track record, the 2019 Volvo S60 takes its cues from its racecar brethren, the 2017 Volvo Polestar S60 TC1. Based off the earlier Volvo S60 sedan, this performance race car took home the FIA World Touring Car Championship by extension of Thed Björk, the first Swedish World Champion racecar driver, in addition to the manufacturer's title alongside Polestar Cyan Racing at the impressive Losail International Circuit in Qatar. Named after the performance division of Volvo Sweden, it is no surprise that every vehicle from the limited edition Polestar Engineered trim from the 2019 cluster was spoken for in less than one hour, exclusively through the Care by Volvo subscription program.
The New Volvo S60 Inscription with a modern Scandinavian interior.
At first glance, the interior design of the S60 stands out in a stunning display of undeniable luxury and elegance, but not in the overly ornate way that one can be tempted to associate with the concept of luxury. The S60 is rather a creation of modern luxury, boasting a clean Scandinavian design and complemented by the Nordic-inspired Thor's Hammer headlights. All of the bells and whistles are still there, but discreetly and strategically placed for an urbane minimalist design nestled in comfort and premium materials such as Ventilated Nappa Leather upholstery and Driftwood Décor Inlay. The Scandinavian design is favoured among automotive designers and on trend for Volvo, with good reason.
Trickling down from the drag strip to the road for the everyday yet no less daring driver, this line of S60 compact sedans represents the most modern reinvention of these historic vehicles. Boasting a 0-100km/h standing start acceleration of 5.8 seconds propelled by 295lb ft of torque, this road car version of the S60 is still quick out of the gate. The S60 continues to transcend its celebrity predecessor by maintaining superior braking and handling across all terrains, courtesy of power steering, brake traction technology and Adjustable Drive-Mode Settings to suit your driving preference of the day: Comfort, Eco or Dynamic.
The new Volvo S60 Momentum, Inscription and R-Design trims.
The inner workings of the S60 range are offered in multiple combinations with four-cylinder powertrains. On the base Momentum trim, drivers can select from FWD and AWD when paired with the T5 turbocharged engine to deliver 250hp, while AWD is standard on the T6 turbocharged and supercharged engine to boost the horsepower to a cheeky 316. Also offered in AWD is the performance T8 twin-charged engine and plug-in hybrid electric system incorporated in the Polestar powertrain, putting this trim in a league of its own by combining the two systems for an impressive output of 400hp. All trims are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission across all trims for a silky transition and imperceptible shift between gears, with the R-design offering manual gearshift paddles for a more immersive action-packed drive.
While the T8 twin-charged engine and plug-in hybrid electric system of the Polestar Engineered is sure to make headlines, let's break down the benefits of combining a turbocharger and supercharger as outfitted on the T6. While both deal within the realms of power to compress the engines air flow to boost power to the engine, a turbocharger is separate from the engine and sources its energy from the exhaust stream, with a wastegate to reduce carbon emissions. A belt directly connects a supercharger to the engine which then sources its energy from atmospheric pressure and is mechanically powered by the crankshaft. Both are adept at converting thinner air, a benefit for ventures in higher altitudes. With efficient air intake comes increased power and speed, and these dual-charged T6 engines are guaranteed to deliver. The 2019 Volvo S60 Momentum, R-Design and Inscription are available now at Volvo of Vancouver.
